FDOT Makes Major Announcement About SR-82

FDOT plans to improve what many call one of Southwest Florida’s most dangerous roads.

The Florida Department of Transportation met with county leaders Friday morning to announce Governor Rick Scott has signed off on a budget that includes more than $120 million to expand and fix SR-82.

A stretch of the roadway is currently being worked on in Hendry County, but with this money, the department’s district secretary said three more busy sections will be able to be completed quicker than anticipated.

Work in the Lee County stretch of the road could begin as soon as next year.

The district secretary, Billy Hathaway, hopes expanding the roadway will alleviate some of the issues causing wrecks.

A lot of the crashes that we have are unfortunately due to people being impatient and passing at times when they shouldn’t pass so having multiple lanes will help to avoid some of those head-on crashes, Hathaway said during the news release.

The $250 million project includes seven sections that will need to be improved.
